Division one bowls goes to the wire

What a season it has been for the bowlers of the teams representing both Ashton Trinity Lodge and Holmes Lodge, culminating in a match between the two teams to decide the winners and runners-up of the First Division competition for 2016.

Ashton Trinity have been a force to be reckoned with for some time but had never before won the trophy. Holmes had gained promotion for the start of last season and had been pleased to end up mid-table in their first season in the top Division.

2016 was to be something else for one of these teams. Ashton Trinity had played with a consistency throughout the season and Holmes were also delighted with most of their results.

So the title was still in the balance and those who turned up to watch were treated to some thoroughly good matches with Ashton Trinity proving to be the stronger in the end. It was good to see the final game between the two captains, Geoffrey Sheppard and John Bimpson, closely fought to a 21 – 19 result, just before the light faded and darkness forced us into the Masonic Hall for refreshment.

The President of the Bowling Group, Geoffrey Porter, congratulated both sides for their efforts throughout the season and thanked them for the manner in which they had played this final game with so much at stake. From the spirit shown and the camaraderie amongst them it was evident that the bowling fraternity get a great deal of enjoyment from their pastime.

The group chairman gave a hearty “well done” to all who participated throughout the year, and hoped everyone involved had enjoyed the season.

Any member of the group who would like to get involved in the bowling next year, even if his lodge doesn’t have a team, he should get in touch with Len Hart, the Bowling Secretary, Len W Hart, and he will be given the information and help required.
